(Article first published in Times of India, 29th October 2005)

Deepak Fertilisers and Petrochemicals Corp. Ltd. (DFPCL) plans to set up a 3 lakh metric tonne per annum greenfield facility for nitric acid and ammonium nitrate in eastern India in two years.

The Pune-based company is setting up the project with an investment of Rs. 400 crore and would primarily focus on the needs of the mining and construction industry.

The project is expected to augment the company's geographical reach cost effectively across the country.

DFPCL already has a prilled ammonium nitrate facility with a capacity of 90,000 tonne at Taloja, near Mumbai. Its 100 per cent subsidiary, Smartchem Technologies Ltd., has two plants with a total capacity of 50,000 tonne in Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat. "The new capacity expansion will propel the company into a new high-growth phase", said S. C. Mehta, MD, DFPCL.

The exact location of the project is yet to be decided. It is expected to come up somewhere between Haldia and Paradip belt, where the mining industry is booming.
