Towards a rewarding retirement

Geetanjali Patole, The Times of India, December 3, 2002

Even the best-laid plans can sometimes unravel at the edges. The best of financial managers could design the least effective retirement plan for himself. And, while, life in the later stages may look a whole lot better for those who start planning early, Deepak Medical Foundation has a specially designed workshop for those who started out much later.

Known for its pioneering work in the all important field of health and health-related problems, the Deepak Foundation, consisting of the Deepak Medical Foundation (DMF) and Deepak Charitable Trust (DCF) recently presented a two-day seminar titled "Joy of Life" on November 29 and 30, at the Central Park Hotel to enlighten and educate all those who were retired, were soon going to retire or were contemplating retirement.

Says Deepak Mehta, MD, Deepak Fertilisers and Petrochemicals Corp. Ltd., and prime mover of the Deepak Foundation, " It's surprising that in the twilight years of their life, individuals tend to develop a closed attitude towards retirement. The reason most people do badly at the end of their career is because they haven't planned how to live their lives after that. The workshop will give them a chance to prepare ahead with financial security, good health and, to enjoy their new found freedom and pursue various interests".

Accordingly, the seminar, with the help of a galaxy of experts in the fields of medicine, finance, health and music gave a broad insight into what lay ahead. While Arvind Laddha of Khandwala Securities `Personal Finance and Insurance' was seen telling participants exactly what to do with their money and how best to reap its harvests, BJ Misar, former Director General of Police, Maharashtra, threw light on `Personal Security' and associated problems.

The session also included a talk with reputed gynaecologists and sonologist, Dr. Vishwas Yevale. A health and nature buff, yoga expert, avid trekker and accomplished yachtsman, Dr. Yevale enlightened participants on basic yogasanas and the preventive measures that need to be taken if illness decides to `drop by'.

The two-day workshop also included a session on music by Nitin Amin, while Dr. Philip Mathew, consulting psychologist with Pragati Foundation, presented a talk on emotive-behaviour therapy. Lastly, it was Dr. Ashutosh Bhupatkar, director of IMDR who spoke on the vital role of an emotional support system.

The workshop, which will be a regular feature of the Foundation, is soon to be launched in Mumbai, Delhi and Baroda. Says Ila Mehta, trustee, DFC and DCT, "We expect these seminars to serve as a spring board for our participants.

Through these seminars we hope that they will build a life time bond with their fellow participants and their instructors. Simultaneously, we hope that these seminars will help participants explore opportunity and open up personal facets of themselves".
