Annexure To Directors' Report

CONSERVATION OF ENERGY, TECHNOLOGY ABSORPTION AND FOREIGN EXCHANGE EARNINGS AND OUTGO

SECTION 217(1) (e) OF THE COMPANIES ACT, 1956

The Companies (Disclosure of particulars in the report of Board of Directors) Rules, 1988

A. CONSERVATION OF ENERGY

(a) Energy Conservation Measures taken

i. The unloading system of liquid Ammonia is modified to utilise the pressure available in the tankers, by unloading it through a pressurised intermediate tank (Ammonia Bullet). This modification has resulted in saving of power used for refrigeration and pumping.

ii. An online oxygen analyser has been provided in the stack of Ammonia reformer. With this it is now possible to know the excess oxygen and tune the reformer firing. This in turn results in fuel saving.

iii. The plant has been provided with online Density meter for natural gas line. This has helped in adjusting the steam carbon ratio in both Ammonia and Methanol plants. The precise steam carbon ratio has resulted in lower consumption of fuel in Ammonia and Methanol plants.

iv. The impeller diameter of the cooling water circulation pump in Nitric Acid plant has been trimmed down to match the required circulation rate. This has reduced the power consumption in the pump.

v. The condensors of the Frick compressors have been augmented to reduce the discharge pressure. This in turn has reduced the power required in the refrigeration.

(b) Additional investments and proposals, if any, being implemented for reduction of consumption of energy

i. A scheme for utilising the energy available in the synthesis loop for the CO2 stripping has been worked out. This will result in higher steam export from Ammonia plant.

ii. Another scheme to export the excess steam to Methanol plant has been worked out and will be implemented in the next financial year. This will reduce the high pressure steam which is being let in Methanol plant.

(c) Impact of the measures at (a) and (b) above for reduction of energy consumption and consequent impact on the cost of production of goods.

The measures referred to above under (a) and the proposal under (b) will result in reduction of energy consumption as stated above. Since the utilities are common for all the plants, it is not possible to quantify the savings for individual product.

(d) Total energy consumption and energy consumption per unit of production as per Form A in respect of industries specified in the Schedule

B. TECHNOLOGY ABSORPTION

C. FOREIGN EXCHANGE EARNINGS AND OUTGO

Particulars with regard to Foreign Exchange Earnings and Outgo are set out in Note No. 16F and 16E of Schedule 12 to the Accounts.

For and on behalf of the Board,
C. K. Mehta
